PersonalityTo many Hughes comes off as an idiot, but in reality he is a very intelligent man. He constantly babbles on about his wife and daughter, and shows pictures of his daughter to everyone he meets. He does so in a very obsessive manner. He is also quite goofy. This however, is mostly a farce. While it is true he is very proud of his wife and daughter, he intentionally exagerrates his love so that people will put their guard down around him.

Underneath he is very intelligent, and very observant. He can notice the slightest change in a person's appearance. He has been very serious when the time comes for it. His objectives are his own and remain a secret. He is also very loyal.

He really is a family man though. Like said, he very much loves his wife and daughter and does tend to dote on her by going a little overboard with gifts. He likes kids altogether, including teenagers like his students. His personal belief is that as an adult, he has to do his part to guide the youth of today, for they are tomorrow's future. Because of this he is very dedicated to his students.Background Little is known about Hughes' past at the school. It is known that he was raised in a country side town in Europe, but which country it is he says doesn't matter. He met his wife, Gracia back home and the two of them had a daughter, Elicia before he moved to Japan to teach English. Hughes was also a soldier, during his 20's, his special skill being throwing knives, but mostly he did deskwork. It is unknown why he left the military, as it is a sore subject he wishes not to discuss. It's speculated that he was somehow injured, or that he's really still working for the military as a spy. There's also rumors that it was because of high level corruption within the military. Whatever it is, Hughes chooses not to discuss it with anyone, and neither does his wife. He says it is a chapter of is life that is closed.

But it is a part that is not closed.

What actually happened was before meeting his wife, Maes was in a relationshp with his best friend Roy Mustang. This relationship started when they were still in the Academy, and continued until they were aburptly outed out by one Frank Archer and were discharged. At this time they went their separate ways, although not without much heartache. Maes found himself able to finally move on with Gracia and discovered that children had the power to make such a world were people are looked down on just for loving another non existant. He became a teacher.

Roy however has not moved on, and they have found each other once again...

RelationshipsROY MUSTANG - Maes’ best friend and former lover before Gracia. Maes still has feelings for Roy (due to the abrupt end of their relationship) and sometimes finds himself torn between those lingering feelings and the ones he has for his family. As a sort of solution for this, Gracia has insisted that the two of them go on dates and such to give their relationship a ‘proper end’.

ALEX LOUIS ARMSTRONG - a friend of Maes from back in his military days. Armstrong worked mostly under Hughes. The two continue to have a strong bond and respect for one another.

SCIESZKA SHESKA - Back in the military, Scieszka worked directly under Hughes until he was discharged. The Hughes family kept in constant contact with her over the years. Recently Scieszka stayed with the Hughes family and helped babysit Elicia.

EDWARD ELRIC - Hughes first met Edward and his brother when they were quite young. He has since treated the brothers as adoptive sons. He is becoming increasingly concerned about them though…

ALPHONSE ELRIC - Like Edward, Maes treats Alphonse like his own son. However, his concerns are mostly centered around the boy, and he worries about him constantly…

WINRY ROCKBELL - Hughes has also known Winry since she was a child. Like the Elrics however he is growing more concerned about her and is disappointed that she left.

NIKLAS ‘ENVY’ AMSEL - Hughes has taken to just ignoring Envy, or responding to his smart ass comments with goofiness. He doesn’t let the kid anger him. HOWEVER if Maes were to find out Envy hurt someone…

FUJINO SHIZURU - Hughes is rather fond of the History teacher and gets along with her well.

KUGA NATSUKI - After the fight that occurred Hughes has not been so fond of Natsuki. However, his opinion of her is slowly starting to change, and her relationship with Shizuru reminds me of his and Roy’s.

HATAKE KAKASHI - Anyone who likes seeing pictures of Elicia is a-okay in Maes’ books! :D

UMINO IRUKA - Iruka counselled him over his torn feelings when Roy went missing. Since then, Hughes has valued Iruka as a trust worthy friend.

MERCURYLAMPE ‘SUIGINTOU’ ROZEN - Hughes was the first person at Suzuran Suigintou wasn’t ice cold to. She in turn was the first person to ever see through his act right away. This impressed Hughes, and his pictures reminded Suigintou fondly of her father. The two enjoy having a match of wits now and then.

KANARIENVOGEL ‘KANARIA’ ROZEN - One of Hughes’ favorite students to tease. He enjoys watching her over react and squeal in the eccentric ways she does.

TAMURA HIYORI - Hiyori had decided to draft Hughes in her new manga as her seme. Hughes is disturbed.

SOHMA MOMIJI - Momiji always reminded Hughes of what a male version of his daughter would be like. So when he found Momiji beaten badly by a member of his own family, Hughes took it hard. He has since tried to do everything he can for the boy.

BRIDGET - Hughes is one of the only people to know of Bridget’s true gender. He is also the only person to figure it out on his own. Hughes tends to use it as “assistance” now and then to get Bridget to do things like his homework and tutoring.

LAPISLAZULISTERN ‘SOUSEISEKI’ ROZEN - After Hughes discovered Bridget’s gender, Souseiseki threatened his manbits. Hughes is afraid.

JADESTERN ‘SUISEISEKI’ ROZEN - Hughes knows of the budding relationship forming between Roy and Suiseiseki. At first he was apprehensive because of her age, but now he views her as Roy’s chance to finally move on…

KINOMOTO SAKURA - Like he is with most of his cute girl students, Hughes is quite fond of Sakura K. He is not aware that her mother is dead however.

ALFONS HEIDERICH - Hughes was first taken aback by Alfon’s resemblance to Alphonse Elric but has come to realize all the many differences. He gave Alfons advice when she needed it, and has somewhat taken the girl under his wing.
